This is an interesting topic and is much spoken about. There was a time when we had the Radio in our houses, soon to be followed by Television, VCP or VCR.
It wasn't long with the development of Lasers that we entered the world of CD players. Things stayed put for some time in the age of mini Hi-fi component players, which saw the integration of the Tape, Radio and CD player.
Things still seemed to be not right and the birth of VCD and Mp3 players rocked the world. with the ongoing development things never seemed to have changed and every day we seem to find newer gadgets entering our houses. DVD players, DivX players, DivX players with on board USB slots. Now we even see BlueRay players seeping in.
On the other hand the idiot box also saw a lot of development. From the Curved Vacuum tube to the Flat vacuum tube to the plasma and LCD TVs, as it is out we want to see it at home.
We have been seeing an integration in the TVs too.
TVs had been out with inbuilt CD and VCD players and now they are out with DVD players too. In fact i have seen TVs with USB slots too.
TVs are now HD ready where in you can enjoy much better picture and s
ound quality.

ound quality. The age of transmission has also changed for the low frequency signals to UHF and now we are in the satellite age. Transmission of TV and Radio signals is now via satellites giving you much better quality of Video and Audio. Now with DTH and Satellite receivers having DVB compatibility, you can store your favorite Movies and TV feeds received from the Satellite directly to the Hard disk.
I can keep going on and on and on. It wont be long before we see just a glass placed on our walls and small, maybe invisibly hidden, speakers which would give the best effects and feel of a true home theatre system.
